Kyrgyz Broadband Seismic Network (KNET)

Summary

Introduction

In September of 1991 the 10 station Kyrgyz broadband seismic network (KNET) became operational. In its lifetime under IRIS sponsorship using JSP funding, it has so far survived the economic and political turbulence from the breakup of the former Soviet Union and the formation of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, as well as the occurrence of the 19 August 1992 magnitude 7.4 Suusamyr earthquake located underneath the network station Almayashu (AML). KNET is a cooperative project sponsored by IRIS and the government of Kyrgyzstan. It is operated by Kyrgyz Institute of Seismology (KIS) and the Institute of High Temperature Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IVTAN). The IRIS participants in this project have included University of California at San Diego, Indiana University, Rennselear Polytechnic Institute, and the University of Colorado. The University of California San Diego last had responsibility for collecting and processing KNET data in 2002.

Geography

KNET is located along part of the boundary between the northern Tien Shan mountains and the Kazakh platform. Several major tectonic features are spanned by the network including a series of thrust faults in the Tien Shan, the Chu Valley, and the NW- SE trending ridges north of Bishkek. At present there exist over 8000 triggered events. These sources are dominated by the aftershock sequences for the magnitude 6.2 earthquake near the city of Osh (~200 km southwest of the network) in May 1992 and the 19 August 1992 magnitude 7.4 Suusamyr event located under the KNET station AML. In addition there are a large number of regional events from the Pamir-Hindu Kush region and from westernmost China.

Instrumentation

The network utilizes Streckeisen STS-2 sensors with PASSCAL dataloggers which are combined with advanced digital telemetry and data processing techniques to provide very high dynamic range (24-bit) and very broadband (0.008 - 50 Hz.) seismic data. The geometry of the network was dictated by maximizing earthquake monitoring capability with line-of-sight telemetry constraints. Since this network has broadband sensors, it may also be used as a long-period array which will enhance signals with apparent wavelengths in the range of 10 to 100 kilometers. Currently 10 stations of KNET are being recorded by triggered and continuous data streams. The triggered data are recorded at 100 sps. Originally the continuous data was recorded at 20 sps, but in 1994 the sample rate was upgraded to 40 sps to acquire more relevant data for verification research. On 11 May 1998 KNET recorded a nuclear test near India/Pakistan border.

Research

Phase arrival times from the Kyrgyz network are being determined as part of normal network operations. A magnitude scale calibrated to US standards is being developed, and will be applied to all local events recorded by the network. Events are being compared with those listed in the PDE and REB to verify detection limitations of this array. Unassociated events are further processed and categorized into local and regional events. Local event locations are determined using conventional earthquake location algorithms and regional events locations are determined from single array location methods. A Kyrgyz network bulletin is produced both at the Kyrgyz Institute of Seismology and at UCSD.

In addition to the triggered data set, there are over five years of network continuous data available at present. These figures show the seismicity within 90 and 160 degree radii of KNET detected during a very detailed analysis of the KNET continuous data. In general the KNET stations are very quiet, with all stations detecting events down to at least magnitude 3.5 out to distances of 90 degrees.

All triggered and continuous data along with several technical reports are available through the IRIS Data Management Center in Seattle, Washington. During normal operations, the data are generally delivered on a weekly basis to the DMC within one month of being recorded. KNET has turned into an invaluable tool for seismologists world-wide as evidenced by the 22 published papers in professional journals, 31 meeting abstracts, 13 papers in various stages of publication, and 6 Ph.D. thesis from different universities based on KNET data.

Future directions

KNET is preparing for its next transition. Beginning 1 July 1998, the operation and maintenance are being turned over to IVTAN and KIS supported by CRDF funding for the period of one year with possible extension afterwards. One of the conditions for future funding for KNET under the CRDF program, is that the data from KNET be available to IRIS and that an INTERNET connection be maintained between KNET and the US. To facilitate this, several groups including NASA, MIT, and IRIS have provided funding for hardware to install an internet connection to IVTAN. In parallel, KNET is being upgraded with the same technology developed for the PASSCAL Broadband ARRAY with the intention that KNET data will be available in real-time over internet. An additional benefit of these upgrades will be the merging of the AAK IRIS/IDA GSN station datastreams with the KNET telemetry to allow internet connectivity.

The University of California San Diego last had responsibility for collecting and processing KNET data in 2002.
