Marianne grew up in Evanston, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. She
graduated from MIT in 2002 with a Bachelor's in Aeronautical Engineering (that pretty much means rocket science), but has never
worked on airplanes or space shuttles. In college, she did some
research on sporting equipment like ski boots and rock climbing gear
through the MIT Center for Sports Innovation. Two years ago she
began working in Antarctica for Prof. Doug MacAyeal, out of the
University of Chicago. He studies the world's largest icebergs in
hopes of understanding their dynamics and responses to climate
change. Marianne completed a Master's in glaciology studying iceberg
collisions under Doug's advisorship in June, and began working on the
Amery projects, for Scripps, in October of this year. She is a huge
fan of the outdoors; her favorite activities are hiking and
backcountry skiing. She also just got herself a mandolin and will be
jamming on the iceshelf with Jim (who plays guitar), Benoit (who
plays saxophone), and Heidi (who has a harmonica).
