James Behrens (Jim) was born and raised in Parma, Ohio, near Cleveland. He went to St. Charles elementary school and Padua Franciscan High School, where his favorite subjects were science and music. While studying physics at Purdue University, he realized that geology would be a fun way to do science outdoors, and decided to minor in earth and atmospheric science. Attending the Summer of Applied Geophysical Experience (SAGE) field camp in 1998 convinced him to combine geology with physics and pursue geophysics in graduate school. He attended the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, and in 2005 completed his doctoral dissertation on the use of electromagnetic energy to image geologic structures beneath the seafloor. He applied for the job of collecting this season's Amery Ice Shelf data for two reasons: the chance to do research that will help people understand how our energy consumption affects our home planet, and because sounded like fun.
