Amery Ice Shelf Loose Tooth Monitoring 2005-2006
Previous | Home | Next
When we returned to Davis Station we were greeted by an unfamiliar sight (and smell!). Once the sea ice had broken up and drifted away, elephant seals migrated to the beaches below station to rest and molt (molting is the annual shedding of the outermost layer of skin). They are named elephant seals because of their distinctive nose. They are able to make incredibly loud snorting and belching sounds. Here, you can see a young male seal yawning as he snoozes in the sun.
