Magnitude 5.43 quake near the US-Mexico border

Last updated: 2018-03-26 17:50:59 UTC

The Anza group at the University of California San Diego operates a broadband seismograph network consisting of 13 (+ 2) three component broadband seismograph stations centered near Anza Californa (see map).

On Saturday, December 8th, 2001 at 15:36 (PST) we recorded a quake (preliminary ml 5.43) located near the US-Mexico border.

If felt the quake, USGS would like to know. Add to the USGS "Did you feel it?" page.
The USGS website was shutdown due to a court order and was unavailable to take your felt reports over the weekend of 12/8-12/9/2001. They are now back on-line and ready to take your report.

We also have a bulletin of recent events recorded by the Anza network

Initial source parameters for the recent event and aftershocks are shown below. The epicentral distance (distance separating the epicenter and the recording network) for Anza is 1.6 degrees (178 km). The distance from San Diego is ~208km.

This map shows the mainshock (red circle). Anza network stations are yellow triangles. Fault lines are shown as thin red lines, roads are shown in grey. Backgound seismicity is also plotted.

We operate a broadband station on Mt. Soledad. At 12/08/2001 15:36:45 PST station SOL recorded the P wave from this event.

Here is a view of that event as picked by our analyst. The pink "P" indicates a P wave arrival, the "S" indicates an S wave arrival.
